Flowers from seed to centerpiece!
Yep! That's me at 3 years old "helping" my Mom in her front flower garden. I have since learned that one should not stand inside the flower bed. I was lucky to grow up in the country with acres of fields and woods to play in. Some of my earliest memories are of picking wild flowers "out back" and sitting in my grandfather's cherry trees eating cherries until I got a tummy ache.
Fast forward many years and a few professions; PBX installer, restaurant manager, food sales, cosmetics sales, telecom project manager. Most spent behind a desk wishing I was outdoors.
Then I met the most wonderful man in the world and married him. (Hey, I'm no fool....when you find a good thing - grab it!) He agreed to let me try my hand at my dream career. Take Your Pick Flower Farm was born in the summer of 2006. It started small with about 30 flower beds. (Not that it is huge now, I farm just about an acre of flowers. But that's plenty to keep me busy).
In 2010 we were selected as one of the Top 10 Pick Your Own Flower Farms in the country by Birds & Blooms magazine. What a rush! Since then we have expanded to include a weekly summer Flower CSA (subscription service), DIY and full-service event and wedding flowers, a farmers' market and classes in flower arranging. In 2017 we partnered with Ability in Bloom, a dynamic, horticulture-based social enterprise of Challenge Workforce Solutions. We are helping to provide jobs for a committed group of adults and teenagers with disabilities and other barriers to employment.
There can be a lot of challenges to this line of work, unpredictable weather, insects and other creatures....namely woodchucks and deer. But I wouldn't trade it for anything else.
